The annual St. Martin’s fete day is a much anticipated event on the island calendar. There are a range of stalls and activities, from the human fruit machine to the water slide that runs through the dunes to the sea. The firemen run a BBQ and there is the ever popular Pimms tent.
Of course no fete is complete without a cake stall and on St. Martin’s this stand is run with great pride, featuring many top secret recipes of the island cake bakers. Along with the cake stall a cake competition is run, this year the theme was floral cakes. This got us thinking… We thought it would be fun to run a virtual fete so that all of your could get involved.
At the fete the interpretation of floral cakes was varied with people using edible flowers for decoration, turning marshmallows into a giant flower, making traditional sugar roses and our favourite a bouquet of sunflower cupcakes.
If you have received our summer newsletter in the post you will have also seen our florist Steph’s step by step guide to making cupcakes from scented pinks as an alternative way to arrange your flowers. There is a page on our website if you would like to see how this look is achieved.
Hopefully you have now been inspired to join in our Scilly Flowers virtual fete, or perhaps it could be a distracting activity over the summer school holidays! Please either email us your pictures of your cupcakes or post them on our Facebook page. Don’t forget the cakes can either be baked with flour or made with flowers, the choice is yours!
